“Until we hear from my Mom or Wendy, I’ll deal; and I’ll deal; and we’ll all just deal. OK? OK. Resuming play.”
How do you survive a blind date? Now how about a blind date on September 12, 2001?
Well, if you are Waverly, a young advertising executive in Minneapolis nervously awaiting news of her New York-based sister, you invite the neighbors round for a drink and have a freewheeling debate about the interconnectedness of your lives. And, if you are Waverly, your aunt - Joyce Carol Oates* - might be in town due to grounded flights and stop by as well.
Craig Wright’s 2002 tragi-comedy is a dizzying, thought-provoking whirlwind about fate and the seemingly random connections we make in life.
Oh yes. And there is a sock puppet.
*not to be confused with the Joyce Carol Oates who wrote so many beloved novels....
